Psychological Aspects of The Smoking Habit

Everybody understands how addictive the nicotine poison is to our system. That is a physical addiction that requires you to maintain a certain, base level of nicotine in your body. There are other physical factors, such as 'ruined tastebuds' and lip attention, that are also physical.

Beyond the nicotine addiction, though, there are many, many psychological factors which combine to make up the smoking habit. Once they are avid smokers, they then justify continuing to smoke, in spite of all of the health warnings, simply because, "it won't happen to me!"


All of these rationalizations, justifications, and "reasons" that a smoker conjures up are psychological roadblocks to quitting smoking. Likewise, the habits related to smoking in certain places, like in a car or a smoking area at work are not because of the physical addiction.

The Stress Factor

Among the strongest of the psychological triggers is stress. All smokers know that they have a urge for a cigarette when facing stressful situations. This is not physical - it is psychological. These factors and others, must be addressed before you can effectively quit smoking on a permanent basis.
